RESIDENZ SI SI DÜ DÜ – Ein Hochhaus für Vögel
The Weltecho art and cultural centre has been run by several cultural initiatives in the former Chamber of Technology since 2007. One of the co-founders, Frank Maibier, is taking part in the NEW ECOLOGIES exhibition with a contribution SI SI DÜ DÜ: “Birds, in all their diversity and beauty, are important companions in our everyday lives. We gain fundamental insights from their behaviour and flights and have been using them for centuries, e.g. for social behaviour, vehicle development, orientation research, energy generation and much more. – Around 70 bird species are under special protection in our neighbourhood. Their habitat is endangered. Global cli-mate change and selfish human intervention in nature have severely altered and restricted their basis of life. – I have therefore designed a bird residence more than five metres high, a kind of skyscraper entitled SI SI DÜ DÜ, the call of the blue tit. The house is equipped with 22 nesting rooms on 11 ring-shaped floors.” While the arrival of the various bird species is still a little delayed due to their slow familiarisation and breeding times, the SI SI DÜ DÜ residence is meanwhile a call and symbol for the coexistence of different creatures here in Chemnitz and beyond. At the Annenschule site, the artwork can be integrated into the everyday life of the future Kooperationsschule. In the meantime, we can familiarise ourselves with our future neighbours by imitating the written bird sounds.
