20 artistic positions
Invited as a class and thinking, feeling and suspecting on the subject of NEW ECOLOGIES, it quickly became clear that the outstanding diversity and different approaches characterise the quality of this class. Instead of one large group project, many extensive individual projects and group collaborations were therefore created. The areas of the individual works range from sculptures, performances, actions, interventions, process-based works, which are only created in the course of the exhibition or will continue to change permanently, and workshops in cooperation with local initiatives. Questions of dystopias and utopias as well as realitybased, scientifically founded research results on current topics such as heat, water and resources, as well as misguided green space policies in urban areas, are reflected upon and processed by the students in an individual way.

Works:
Selin Acarbaş – endegutallesgut (Position 5)
A rainbow made of epoxy resin melts and sweats in the beam of two spotlights and casts shadows. Seeing a rainbow can trigger fleeting moments of happiness. As an object, product or commodity, it reminds us that humans should not domesticate everything that Mother Earth gives us.
Si Cheng – Die wachsende Stadt
The display case contains a 3D model of the city of Chemnitz made of mixed substrate. A living fungus mycelium is growing on it. Due to the fiber-degrading properties of the fungal mycelium, the textile waste in the substrate is slowly broken down. Increasingly overgrown by the mycelium, a completely different and organic image of the city, its ruins and its waste emerges.
Hannah Doepke – In-Fluence
The installation “In-Fluence” sends the amplified sound of words into a pool of water that casts shadows on the wall. The work addresses the human impact on nature and, in this context, our precious resource water, the basis of all life on this earth, but also our dependence on it. Starting 04.09.2024
Cosima Geiser – B o w l i n g t o g e t h e r
Sociologist Robert D. Putnam has shown that since the 1960s there has been a steady decline in civic engagement and increasing individualization, which is exemplified by bowling. More and more people are bowling alone. Taking up this metaphor, the video installation illustrates that this lack of community favors a policy that exploits nature. The bowling ball can no longer be bowled alone. It needs a flexible group of people to play.
Vanessa Hähnel – Brotest
“Brotest” (breadtest) as a protest against the overproduction and unfair distribution of food. An interactive installation that is performed by performers and passers-by. Until 07.07.2024
Johanna Herrmann – in situ
“In situ” shows seven canvases, on each of which a piece of watercolor paint was applied on seven consecutive days and exposed to the weather of the city of Chemnitz. Depending on the rain event, an excerpt-like, visual weather diary was created.
Hanne Jannasch – Tisch mit Kartoffeln III
“Tisch mit Kartoffeln III” (Table with potatoes III) shows a temporary arrangement of standardized furnishings and tableware from a typical furniture store, photographs and sprouting potatoes from local households. The potatoes were collected in advance through appeals with flyers. The condition represents a strange moment in the existence of things.
Taemen Jung – Fit into the space
“Fit into the space” is a mobile bed of Korean perilla plants with which the artist will be wandering through Chemnitz on selected days. The plant from the mint family is used in Korean cuisine to make salads and kimchi. Despite its emotional and culinary significance, it is difficult to obtain in the diaspora, which is why it is cultivated in many places on a self-organized basis. A perilla kimchi workshop will take place on the 17th of August at 3 pm.
Lukas Reiber – Und wenn_
If a change of use is declared for the green space next to the Karl Marx Monument – would the entire area be temporarily declared agricultural and common land and, as a result, maintained, used and managed by the population as common property?
Franziska Rist – konserviert
The artwork “konserviert” aims to enable viewers to engage with the idea of conservation and preservation as an instrument of a sustainability strategy. It is about questioning one‘s own consumption and habits and which things and practices are worth preserving and passing on for the future.
Christian Silvester Seemann – Glitching Carlowitz – der erste Klimaschützer war Sachse
The local weather and climate have a direct influence on the portrait of Hans Carl von Carlowitz. Born in Chemnitz- Rabenstein, he is considered the founder of the concept of sustainability in 1713.
Kata Bense, Chiara Doniselli, Daniela Echevarria, Livia Martino, Minh Duc Vu – Wasserkörper
The installation “Wasserkörper” (Water Bodies) invites us to think about what connects our bodies with the water in us and around us. How does liquidity change our relationship with other people, non-human beings and the environment?
Jennifer Weigt – Schirm und Schein
Repurposed umbrella frames take over the city center and become symbols for the fragility of our built environment.
