Hitzeinseln
In hot city centres, shady places become a luxury. These places are often bound to consumption, which leads to exclusion, as not everyone can afford them. The artist and student of the class Nevin Aladağ at the Dresden University of Fine Arts, Anna Lorenzana, deals with islands of urban heat in her artistic work. These occur when a lack of air circulation prevents the hot air in the streets from exchanging with the cooler air from parks and green spaces. She presents this phenomenon in the form of excerpts from heat index and shading maps, which she has translated and illustrated in digitally modelled grassy areas. These posters are also displayed on advertising pillars, which are often found in hot urban areas. With this artwork, the artist aims to draw attention to the challenges and solutions of urban overheating and at the same time raise awareness of the impact such extreme weather phenomena can have on our private lives in the future.
“Hitzeinseln” was developed in co-operation with ThINK – Thuringian Institute for Sustainability and Climate Protection, the City of Chemnitz and the Saxon State Office for Environment, Agriculture and Geology.
